It is astounding how much Americans as a whole spend frivolously on things that bring little to no value to our lives. Most purchases are made for an instant gratification. The Black American population is a major culprit. While Black Americans make up just 14% of the population, we are responsible for some $1.2 trillion in purchases annually. Black Americans shape the culture. As stated in a recent report, “Our research shows that Black consumer choices have a ‘cool factor’ that has created a halo effect, influencing not just consumers of color but the mainstream as well,” says Cheryl Grace, Senior Vice President of U.S. Strategic Community Alliances and Consumer Engagement, Nielsen. So, now you know your dollar is powerful, but how many of those dollars are you holding. Building wealth is instrumental in becoming financially secure. Wealth is not measured by income, but net worth: your assets (what you own) minus your liabilities (what you owe).
